November 5, 2010 - REP. SMITH AWARDED HOWARD CHERRY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADVOCATE
BMCC President John Turner announced that Oregon Representative Greg Smith, Heppner, will receive the 2010 Howard Cherry Award for ‘Outstanding Community College Advocate’ at the Oregon Community College Association Convention on November 5, 2010.
Turner characterized Smith by saying, "Representative Smith is always willing to give valuable time to attend hearings, meetings, seminars and conferences that deal with community college issues. He exemplifies the criteria necessary for the Howard Cherry Community College Advocate Award. Greg Smith, like Howard Cherry, has been a tireless advocate for education and his work to help us fund the Eastern Oregon Higher Education Center in Hermiston, which will educate and train hundreds more students, is to be commended.”
OCCA executive director Andrea Henderson said Representative Smith has a solid reputation for advocacy on behalf of education and she applauded his knowledge of the complex needs and benefits afforded students and the Oregon economy by having strong community colleges, universities, and K-12 systems.
